1849-D $5 MS62 NGC. Variety 22-N. A die combination that "appears to be very rare," according to Winter, though the practice of attributing Dahlonega gold by die variety is not so widespread as for other issues. What is unquestionably very rare, however, is an example in this level of preservation or finer, since the only quibble is whether enough resubmissions appear in the Census and Population Report that such pieces should be termed extremely rare instead! The coin offered here has a solid strike, better than the norm, and the partially prooflike fields have pretty luster. A number of light ticks and other marks appear on the surfaces, which are yellow-gold with a touch of green, but these are well-distributed, and the overall visual appeal is strong.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
