1849-D $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. The 1849-D (10,945 coins produced) is similar in overall rarity to the 1848-D (13,771 pieces produced). The former issue, however, is rarer in high (AU-Mint State) grades, and Winter (1997) states that only one Uncirculated coin is extant. The two major grading services report nine coins in Mint State, but when one allows for resubmissions, we still cannot overstate the high grade rarity of this issue. This is the finest '49-D Quarter Eagle that we have offered, and it is unsurpassable at either NGC or PCGS (7/02). While this issue is not as well produced as the 1846-1848 Quarter Eagles from the Dahlonega Mint, the present example displays overall sharp definition. In fact, there are really no ill-defined features, and the yellow-gold surfaces are bright with appreciable brightness in the fields. Scattered abrasions are consistent with the MS62 grade level, and the only noteworthy pedigree marker is a pinscratch in the lower right reverse field at the tip of the olive branch. We have handled only one other Mint State '49-D Quarter Eagle over the past ten years, and it is Ex: Cornerstone '91 Sale (Mid-American, 8/91), lot 653; 1999 FUN Signature Sale--The North Georgia Collection (Heritage, 1/99), lot 7645; Ex: 2001 FUN Signature Sale--The Mark Hurst Collection (Heritage, 1/01), lot 8086.
