1849-D $2 1/2 MS60 NGC. Variety 11-M. High date with the 1 distant from the border; this is the more common of the two varieties. The 1849-D has a mintage of 10,945 pieces. In his second edition of Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint, 1838-1861, Douglas Winter estimates 115 to 135 coins have survived to the present day, mostly in Very Fine to About Uncirculated condition. The NGC/PCGS figures substantiate Winter's claim with respect to the grade distribution of extant pieces, and when likely resubmissions are taken into account, the total number of survivors as well. Sixteen Mint State coins have been graded, all between MS60 and MS62.
Bright yellow-gold color covers each side of the MS60 specimen in this lot, and a relatively powerful strike is manifested in sharply defined design elements. A few light handling marks help account for the grade, and a couple of small indentations, most likely mint made, are seen on Liberty's cheek. The reverse is rotated about 45 degrees clockwise.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
