Lot ciontaining Two (2) original historic Gold Rush Period Newspapers of "The New York Herald," consecutive issues No. 5595 and No. 5596, four pages each, measuring 22" x 15". These two issues cover the booming California Gold Rush expansion, and are true collector's items because they provide many historical insights and first-hand period information on the Gold Rush.

1. The front page story on Oct. 1, 1849 provides, "Additional from Mexico and California" and discusses "the Secret Expedition--the Preparations To Resist the Americans--News From Yucatan--Arrival Of The American Minister--The Expulsion of Foreigners From the Mines of California." This news flash highlights the expulsion of "Chilians, Mexicans, and other emigrants of Spanish origin... They are exposed to continual vexations, and the country cannot possess much charm for them...". The article explains that the Spanish descendants were first in the mines and have taken the riches back to their home countries, and that "Americans" are therefore justified in expelling them.

2. The Oct. 2, 1849 edition has more front page articles on "Affairs to Mexico and California", including a shipwreck at Mazatlan; the Indians and how the Mexicans view California society. Page two has a lengthy article about abolitionism and commentary about battles with Native American Indians in Texas.
