1849-C G$1 Closed Wreath MS61 NGC. Winter 2-B. The Closed Wreath is, by far, the more common of the two varieties of the first-year 1849-C Gold Dollar. It is not, however, a common coin in an absolute sense. No more than 110 pieces are believed extant from a limited original mintage, and most of these grade VF or XF. In AU and Mint State, Winter ranks the '49-C Closed Wreath sixth in rarity among the nine Gold Dollar issues form this branch mint. This coin possesses significant eye appeal for the MS61 level of preservation. The surfaces are bright with yellow-gold color and a moderate, yet appreciable prooflike finish on both sides. The latter feature is unusual since most high grade '49-C Closed Wreath Dollars are semi-prooflike on the obverse and more frosty on the reverse. The latter side reveals vertical striations (as produced) in the field, and there are also a few on the obverse, but neither side displays many sizeable handling marks. The otherwise sharp strikes wanes ever so slightly over the central obverse highpoint. Identifiable by a nearly vertical abrasion in the obverse field above the bun at the back of Liberty's hair. From the Ashland City Collection.
