1849-C $5 MS62 PCGS. Variety 12-F, Die
1849-C<$5> MS62 PCGS. Variety 12-F, Die State I. The variety is attributed by the high date, with the 1 in the date closer to the bust than to the dentils, while the 9 is centered between the bust and the dentils. The die state is confirmed by the perfect reverse die, on which there is no die crack in the lower left (facing) quadrant. The '49-C is among the more common Charlotte half eagles, and is readily available in VF and XF; even AU specimens can be located without too much problem. Mint State coins are more difficult to find; PCGS and NGC have currently certified slightly more than 30 pieces.
The MS62 coin presented here displays bright, peach-gold surfaces with somewhat prooflike fields that show die striations on the reverse. The design elements are nicely impressed, with the exception of the usual softness in the hair curls at the forehead, as well as minor weakness on the eagle's neck and legs. A few minute abrasions and wispy slide marks are noted on the obverse. Population: 4 in 62, 3 finer (2/06).
