1849-C $5 AU58 PCGS
1849-C $5 AU58 PCGS. Variety 12-F. Die State II with a reverse crack from the rim just past the left side of the U in UNITED into the leaves ending in the eagle's right leg. The obverse is quite well struck while the reverse has some weakness on the right leg. The obverse is a bit "ticky" with some abrasions seen in the fields while the reverse is surprisingly clean and choice. The luster is satiny in texture and much of the original surfaces are intact; the luster on the reverse is, in fact, nearly full and it suggests a Mint State coin. Struck in light green-gold and showing nicer color than usual for the date, this is an attractive, affordable high grade piece that would work well in a type set.
The 1849-C is among the most available half eagles from this mint. In AU as many as four to five dozen are known and examples can be found in AU55 to AU58 without difficulty. In Uncirculated, an estimated 10 to 12 pieces are known with the finest an incredible NGC MS66 that was first offered as lot 330 in the Bowers and Merena March 1998 auction.
From The Carolina Circle Collection.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
