1849-C $2 1/2 XF45 PCGS. The 1849-C is tied with the 1841-C as the fifth rarest Quarter Eagle produced at the Charlotte Mint. Only the 1842-C, 1843-C Small Date, 1846-C, and 1855-C are rarer in an absolute sense. With just 14-16 coins believed extant in AU (per Winter), the present Choice Extremely Fine survivor is sure to elicit strong bids from dedicated Southern gold collectors. The ample remaining obverse definition is suggestive of a sharp strike on that side. The reverse is weaker, particularly on the eagle--a feature that is not unheard of for the issue. Rich olive-gold color adorns both sides, neither of which possesses any distractions that are out of context with the assigned grade. Select angles reveal faint remnants of original luster in the more protected areas around the devices. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
