1849-C $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. Variety 11-G. The strike on this piece is slightly better than average for the date with most of the central details plainly visible except for the eagle's facing leg. The obverse fields are fairly scuffy, including a sharp nick behind Liberty's head and a light, old vertical scratch on the face; the reverse is cleaner and choicer. There is a fair amount of luster seen on both sides with a considerable amount of prooflike surface in the protected areas of the obverse; the reverse is frostier in texture and has nearly full luster. Both sides show light to medium greenish-gold color. The obverse is just a bit too abraded for this coin to grade AU58, but it is an attractive specimen with an especially choice reverse. In properly graded AU55 and higher, the 1849-C is a rare issue. Housed in an old PCGS holder.
Of the 100-125 1849-C quarter eagles that are believed to exist, perhaps two dozen AUs are known. Most are in the AU50 to AU53 range and choice, higher end AUs are quite rare. In Uncirculated there are just four 1849-C quarter eagles accounted for, making this among the rarest quarter eagles from Charlotte in Mint State.
From The Carolina Circle Collection.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
