1849 $5 Pacific Company Copper Gilt Five Dollar Pattern AU50 Uncertified. K-4, High R.7. Sharply struck with the obverse displaying a pole holding the Phrygian cap of Liberty with rays and stars emanating all around it. The reverse sports an eagle with outstretched wings and talons grasping a hammer and a branch of leaves. A nice gilt matte-like finish obverse, but the reverse shows a spot of flaking under the Y in COMPANY and a larger area below the hammer. A few other surfaces flaws are noted but an attractive overall appearance. Only four Pacific Five Dollar Gold Pieces are known (two of which are impounded) as well as four Ten Dollars (three of which are impounded) and two Dollars, but several patterns exist from Pacific Company dies. Many are silver, a few are struck over Federal or foreign silver coins, and a number are in copper.
