1849 $5 Oregon Exchange Co. Five Dollar--Mount Removed--NCS. VF Details. K-1, R.5. Although the Western gold rush took place in California, and private coinage operations were set up in that region, a certain amount of gold found its way into neighboring Oregon, where the economy was previously based on the fur trade and beaver pelts formed a medium of exchange. Because most of the gold that traveled into the region was in the form of gold dust with its lower perceived value, the Oregon Exchange Company was established to provide coinage services.
This piece has slightly rough surfaces from use in jewelry. A mount that was once attached to this greenish-gold piece has been carefully removed and the surfaces restored. Today, it is still an attractive piece with all details outlined and visible.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
