1849 $5 Norris, Gregg, & Norris Five Dollar, Reeded Edge AU55 PCGS. K-3, R.6. The absence of an obve
1849 $5 Norris, Gregg, & Norris Five Dollar, Reeded Edge AU55 PCGS. K-3, R.6. The absence of an obverse period after the word ALLOY differentiates K-3 from K-4, the other Reeded Edge variety of the 1849 Norris, Gregg, & Norris Five Dollar issue. K-3 is the rarest of the 1849 varieties, and we have not handled a similarly graded example in recent memory. We did, however, auction a pair of K-4 AU55 PCGS coins in 1999: the first realized $7,763 as lot 7847 in our FUN Signature Sale, and the second traded hands for $11,500 as lot 7724 in our Chicago ANA Signature Sale. This Choice About Uncirculated survivor displays original, deeply set, green-gold color over both sides with a bit more copper patina than the specimen above, especially on the reverse (and just a bit more wear). Remnants of a prooflike finish are seen around many of the obverse devices, this despite scattered abrasions and a little light rub. All major design elements are boldly, if not sharply detailed, and the surfaces are problem-free for the AU level of preservation. An important bidding opportunity for the advanced Territorial gold specialist and an attractive example of this scarcer variety. Listed on page 287 of the 2002 Guide Book. From The Estate of Jack L. Klausen. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
