1849 $5 Norris, Gregg, & Norris Five Dollar R.E. AU53 PCGS. K-4, R.4. Period after ALLOY. The Norris, Gregg, & Norris gold pieces of 1849 are considered to be the first gold coins produced in California. These five dollar coins are known from obverse dies with or without a period after the word ALLOY. This particular specimen has the period small enough to be nearly invisible. Lustrous and well struck, save for typical softness on the eagle, this piece also displays deep reddish-gold and green-gold coloration. Slightly worn with a few small marks, and a couple of moderate abrasions on the lower reverse. There are some variations in color due to improper mixing of the alloy; these occur primarily near the reverse periphery. Listed on page 351 of the 2008 Guide Book. Population: 6 in 53, 15 finer (7/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
