The principals of the N, G, & N Company left New York for the California gold fields in early 1849. Dies were obtained from Albert Kuner, who engraved some of the dies for Augustus Humbert at the U.S. Provisional Branch Mint in San Francisco. Kuner also designed and engraved the famous Baldwin and Company "Horseman Ten." Assays rated the N, G, & N Half Eagles at less than the five dollar face value. The establishment of the State Assay Office in 1850 possibly hastened the demise of the partnership. This attractive golden-brown piece displays luster throughout protected areas and has no objectionable marks. Listed on page 294 of the 2005 Guide Book.
