1849 $5 Norris, Gregg, & Norris Five Dollar R.E. MS61
1849<$5> Norris, Gregg, & Norris Five Dollar R.E. MS61 NGC. K-4, R.4. Period after ALLOY, followed by stop between this word and GOLD. The 1849 issue of five dollar gold coinage by this firm includes examples with the edge reeded or plain. Each of these are known from obverse dies with or without a period after the word ALLOY. This particular specimen has the period small enough to be nearly invisible, from a lapped die. All of the individual border beads are similarly smaller (compare to the plain edge, with period example offered in this sale), suggesting that the variety without period may be nothing more than a die state, and not a physically different obverse die.
The Norris, Gregg, & Norris gold pieces of 1849 are considered to be the first gold coins produced in California. This example is a pleasing Mint State specimen with fully lustrous surfaces and evidence of slight reflectivity in the fields. Both sides have lovely honey-gold color with pleasing orange toning. Each side is lightly abraded. Listed on page 347 of the 2007 Guide Book. Census: 5 in 61, 0 finer (7/06).
From The Long Beach Family Collection.
