<B>1849 $5 Norris, Gregg, & Norris Five Dollar R.E. AU58 PCGS.</B></I> K-3, R.6. The Reeded Edge subvariety without a period after ALLOY. Norris, Gregg, & Norris holds a footnote in numismatic history as the first California private gold coiner, although their monopoly ended once Moffat & Co. began production of gold coins in late July 1849. Presumably, the firm was unable to compete with Moffat, and relocated to Stockton, since a single 1850-dated N. G. & N. half eagle is known with the reverse inscription STOCKTON instead of SAN FRANCISCO. This bright canary-gold piece shows only light wear on the shield, and the fields lack detrimental marks. The reverse field at 6 o'clock has a slight change in color and texture.
