1849 $5 Norris, Gregg, & Norris Five Dollar, Plain Edge MS61 NGC. K-2, R.5. According to Kagin's 1981 book Private Gold Coins and Patterns of the United States, K-2 is the rarest 1849 Norris, Gregg, and Norris Five after K-3. Examples of this company's coinage are historically significant as the first private gold coins produced in Gold Rush California. A pleasing Mint State representative, this richly colored example displays copper-gold tinting over deeply set olive-gold hues. There are scattered abrasions, as well as some scuffiness in the field around the date, but none of the distractions are unusual for a BU quality Territorial gold coin. The numeral 5 for the denomination on the eagle's shield is sufficiently bold and readily evident. Listed on page 287 of the current Guide Book. Combined NGC and PCGS population for the Plain Edge 1849 delivery is four coins in MS61 and six pieces finer (10/02).
