1849 $5 Mormon Five Dollar XF45 PCGS. K-2, R.5. Issued by the Deseret Assay Office under authority of the Mormon Church in Utah, the Mormon gold pieces were issued in 1849 in denominations of two and a half, five, ten, and twenty dollars. The twenty dollar gold coins were the first such coins issued in the United States, preceding the regular-issue Federal double eagles by a few months. In 1850 an assay of the Mormon gold pieces--which due to a lack of parting acids were produced from unrefined California gold dust that contained only the native silver alloy--show them to be underweight in terms of their face value, averaging 866 thousandths fineness. If they circulated at all, they were taken at a considerable discount, and it is quite likely that many of the small mintages were later melted. All examples of Mormon coinage are quite rare. The present example shows about half of its remaining original luster over green-gold surfaces. A couple of light scrapes beneath the 1849 date are barely worthy of singular mention. Population: 21 in 45, 27 finer (11/06).
From The Twin Hollows Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
