1849 $5 Mormon Five Dollar AU58 NGC. A sharply struck
1849 $5 Mormon Five Dollar AU58 NGC. A sharply struck example of this famous issue, since the fingers of the clasped hands show greater definition than usually seen. It is possible that the piece was struck twice by the dies, given the quality of the strike and the slight doubling on LORD and the D in DOLLAR. The light green-gold surfaces retain considerable luster, particularly across the peripheral legends. As expected from a piece with a brief stint in commerce, the fields show a few faint marks, but none are of any individual consequence. 1849 was the only Mormon gold date with more than one denomination struck. The Mormons struck two and a half dollar, five dollar, ten dollar, and twenty dollar pieces in 1849, but only five dollar pieces in 1850 and 1860.
