1849 $5 Moffat & Co. Five Dollar MS62 NGC. K-4a, R.4. John Little Moffat was born in Goshen, New York, on Feb. 21, 1788. A veteran of the Southern Appalachian Gold Rush of the 1830s, he and Curtis, Perry, and Ward traveled to California and established Moffat & Co. on the San Francisco waterfront. After the Bavarian-born engraver George Albrecht Ferdinand Kuner joined the firm from New York, Moffat & Co. enacted plans to produce gold coins.
Despite characteristic softness of strike, this piece is well preserved and attractive. The lustrous surfaces exhibit a distinctly granular texture as well as pleasing yellow-green patination. Just a few small abrasions are noted on each side. Many of Moffat & Co.'s gold issues were melted to provide bullion for the San Francisco Mint's first coinage of 1854, making Mint State Moffat half eagles like this one extremely hard to find. Listed on page 348 of the 2007 Guide Book. Population: 8 in 62, 5 finer (4/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
