<B>1849 $5 Moffat & Co. Five Dollar AU58 PCGS.</B></I> K-4a, R.4. The Moffat & Co. coinage was the only private coinage that continued after the James King of William exposé that discredited, rightly or wrongly, several other private coiners including Dubosq, Schultz, and Baldwin, eventually leading to the demise of those firms and others, such as Dunbar & Co.<BR> Reeded edge, with the reverse die break at E DO in the denomination. On this lustrous near-Mint State piece the die crack runs all the way through IVE DO and a second crack has nearly shattered the vertical upright of the E, with crumbling noted on several of the reverse letters. It seems unlikely the reverse die could have lasted much longer. Still a lustrous coin under light smoky field haze. A small scrape before Liberty's head is noted.
