John Moffat was one of the most highly respected California assayers and coiners. His product passed the scrutiny of Eckfeldt and DuBois, who wrote of this firm: "A large promiscuous lot of both kinds of Moffatt (sic) and Co.'s coins, dates 1849, 1850, shows an average fineness of 897; average weight, to the ten-dollar piece, 258 1/4 grains; average value $9.97,7." This piece is densely peppered with small abrasions from its short time in circulation, and the surfaces show the usual pronounced green-gold coloration. A bit unevenly struck.
