1849<$10> Moffat & Co. Ten Dollar, "Ten Dol." VF25 PCGS. Kagin-6a, R.5. The first private coiner in California was the firm of Norris, Gregg, & Norris, followed closely thereafter by Moffat & Co. These 1849-dated $10 pieces were the first coins of this firm, and they are usually found well circulated, even moreso than this attractive example. Two varieties were issued in 1849, the first having the denomination spelled as TEN D., the second as TEN DOL. The surfaces are lightly abraded, and both sides exhibit considerable weakness. Rich orange-gold color is blended with pale green on both sides. Listed on page 295 of the 2005 Guide Book.
