(1849) $10 Miners Bank Ten Dollar AU58 PCGS. K-1, R.6. Unlike the previous piece, which was struck in silver alloy, this coin was struck on a planchet that alloyed gold with copper. The rims are also much sharper than the beveled rims on the K-2 example, with sharp denticulation around both sides. The surfaces are tinged in rich orange-gold shades with some reflectivity still evident in the more protected areas. The piece is quite sharply struck with a wisp of copper showing through on the reverse. Some original luster is evident in the protected areas. Somewhat scuffy from light circulation, yet not excessively abraded for a Territorial gold coin with sharp definition over all the features. There are three closely spaced distractions in the reverse field below the E in TEN that should help trace the pedigree of this important representative. Listed on page 293 of the 2002 Guide Book. Writing in 1981, Don Kagin (Private Gold Coins and Patterns of the United States) states that examples of K-1 may have been struck in the East before the dies were shipped to California. Once in San Francisco, the dies were used to produce the K-2 (silver alloy) examples. They are distinct from the silver-alloyed specimens by their strong strike, sharper rims, and top serif on the second I in CALIFORNIA as well as their hues. This is the finest 1849 K-1 Miners Bank Ten Dollar that we can remember offering and is one of the finest specimens extant with only three or four known in Mint State. The most recent appearance of an AU representative in a Heritage auction was as lot 7716 in our 1999 Chicago ANA Signature Sale. That coin, graded AU50 PCGS and part of the Eugene Peterson Collection, realized $15,000.From The Estate of Jack L. Klausen.
