<B>1849<$10> AU50 NGC.</B></I> Breen-6888. Walter Breen described this variety as an 1849/1848 overdate with repunching visible on all but the digit 1, each original digit about 25% below the final position. Speculation remains about the true nature of this repunching, with some students suggesting that it is not an actual overdate but merely a repunched date. Either way, it is certainly dramatic and undoubtedly quite rare. A diagnostic die crack runs through the crossbar of the 4, from the border to the bust truncation, continuing vertical through the neck to the lovelock. Lightly worn with hints of original luster on the mustard-orange surfaces and assorted handling marks.<BR><I>From The Clifton Rodenburg Collection.</B></I>
