(1848 PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN ZACHARY TAYLOR)
757. 1848 PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN ZACHARY TAYLOR (1784 - 1850) Twelfth President of the United States, "Old Rough and Ready" was also a her of the Mexican War, taking Monterrey and defeating Santa Anna. An exceptional A.L.S. by J. H. HARMAN, pro-slavery editor of The Detroit Free Press, 1p. 4to., "Free Press Office", Detroit, Sept. 12, 1848, to an unknown recipient, discussing his views of anti-slavery presidential candidate Zachary Taylor. In part: "...I forward you the reply of Gen. L[ewis] Cass to Daniel Webster at your request. There are two copies in the city...I spoke to him [Cass] in relationship to your request and he has been kind enough to secure a copy be made. We are in fine condition here and shall certainly give 6,000 majority in Michigan. The van Buren movement takes more from the Whigs than from us. We meet the issues openly and have no fears of the result. The Whigs...are endeavoring to move for Taylor, an abolitionist and openly advocate the principles of the militant promises...". Of course, Taylor would win this election, and spearhead the Missouri Compromise in attempt to avoid the Civil War! Very good. $75-100
