Popular Zachary Taylor “Monterey” Military Medal MI-23
(1848) “Original” Major General Zachary Taylor “Monterey” Military Medal. Julian MI-23. Bronzed Copper. Sculpted by John Battin, Engraved by C.C. Wright. Gem Mint State.
64 mm. Julian MI-23. Very scarce. Struck at the United States Mint, where its 1850 dated report indicate that 25 examples of this medal were struck in 1850. (Harzog indicates a mintage of only 138 pieces.) This is an original example, with rich original mahogany red color on semi-prooflike hard surfaces for both sides. Obverse with a military uniformed bust of Taylor facing right, his name around the upper portions. The reverse inscription partially recording the Resolution of Congress authorizing the medal for Taylor’s victory at the Battle of Monterey. Julian, in his “Medals of the United States Mint”, retells the story of how Taylor hated to wear his uniform, thus this medallic portrayal of him in full uniform is unusual and not exactly correct. We sold a lesser quality hairlined example back in February of 2001 graded Choice Mint State for $805.
