1848-O<H10C> MS65 PCGS. V-6. Large O. Attributed as V-5 in the Al Blythe Seated Liberty half dime reference. The V-6 attribution is based on Will Harmon's article appearing in Collective Volume Number Four of the Gobrecht Journal from an article that originally appeared in the March 1993 issue. The coin's diagnostics are a nearly textbook example of this variety, including stars outlined by a surrounding border, with stars 5 and 6 more pronounced; the shield pointing to the right side of the 1; the pendant above the extreme right end of the serif on the 4; and a large O mintmark equidistant from the bows, but tilted slightly to the right.
The present beautiful example shows patches of ice-blue over the most sunset-orange surfaces. While the strike is well executed for a New Orleans Mint piece, there is some weakness on the left side of the wreath, on the A and I of HALF DIME, and on the left half of the mintmark. Some light clash marks are visible in the obverse fields near Liberty's head. Population: 12 in 65, 10 finer (6/06).
