1848-O<H10C> MS63 NGC. V-7. Large O. Light silvery gray with luster in the fields. We note some scattered handling marks expected for the grade. This die pairing is the result of a muling between obverse 6 and reverse 1 and 3. This issue was struck after the V-6 coins, as the obverse die shows weaker dentils and additional die lapping. The reverse die shows extensive lapping and some clashing, with the lettering MERIC particularly weak. Generally a well struck coin, with strong details on Liberty's head and the stars. An impressive example of this variety, and a coin which was unique at the time it was published in The Gobrecht Journal issue 58 in March of 1993.
Ex: Lester Merkin's Sale (9/68) lot 170; Stack's Sale (5/92) lot 65.
From The William A.
