1848-O<H10C> AU58 NGC. "Valentine-8." The 1848-O Half Dimes were a particular favorite of Bill Harmon, and his study of these coins appeared in the March 1993 issue of the Gobrecht Journal, as well as Collective Volume Number Four of the same publication. He described eight different die combinations of this date. Earlier, Will Neil (1927) and Daniel Valentine (1931) each described two die varieties. Years later, in 1958, Walter Breen recorded six pairs of dies but provided rather insufficient details. Three decades later, in his Complete Encyclopedia, he alluded to seven varieties but still gave rather limited descriptions. Although rarity information was not given for any of the eight varieties, it is probably the case that all are scarce or rare, and some varieties are certainly rarer than others. This is the plate coin for the V-8 variety in Harmon's article, and it is the only example seen by the author. The obverse is the same as "V-1" and the reverse is a late die state of "V-2." The reverse die has extensive die cracks through the legend. This example is sharply struck with nearly full luster and excellent eye appeal. The surfaces have pale gray color with lovely gold and iridescent toning.
Ex: Larry Briggs (8/1992). Previously from an unidentified Stack's auction.
From The William A.
