1848 N-7 R1 MS63. Bright original mint red fading to steel brown, more than half the red remaining. There is a small spot of darker brown toning at the bottom of star 7, a small spot of very fine carbon just right of star 1, and a smooth planchet chip on the rim left of star 2, as struck. MDS, die state b. There is a small lump on the bottom edge of the curl over the left side of the second 8 and the fields are covered with fine radial die flowlines. A very attractive mint state cent, CC#4 for the die variety. Plated inside the front cover of the second edition of the Grellman book on late date cents (see the second 1845 N-4 in this sale for the story). DWH #1840.
