1848 N-4 R4 Strongly Repunched Date MS60+.
1848 N-4 R4 Strongly Repunched Date MS60+. Frosty steel brown with traces of original mint red showing on both sides. There are very faint hints of an old fingerprint on the chin and in the field before the face, and a very tiny diagonal nick close over star 2. M-LDS, die state b late. The date repunching is still visible on all 4 digits, including inside the bottoms of both 8’s, but it is no longer present inside the triangle of the 4. There is a small, shallow low spot caused by debris on the die at the hair under star 7 (as struck), plus several other similar low spots inside the wreath. A very attractive example of this tough die variety, tied for CC#2 behind a marginally finer example in the Grellman census. DWH #3185.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
