1848 Liberty Seated Dollar PCGS PR62
Borrowing a line from the "Hitchhiker's Guide", not only is this coin rare, it is rarer than rare! Within a series of noted rarities, the 1848 issue is certainly among the rarest of the proof Seated dollars. Of the estimated 25-35 specimens originally coined, Bowers, in his "Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States", speculates that between nine and seventeen examples are extant today. PCGS has certified a mere three '48 proof dollars, and NGC has seen just nine of these coins (8/05). The small output of 15,000 business strike dollars this year fuels added interest in the rare proof issue.

The PR62 specimen offered here exhibits clear definition on the main design elements, and each side is dappled in brown, blue, dusky-gold, and golden-brown patina. The reverse is relatively devoid of abrasions, while the obverse displays a few minute ticks on the neck, cheek, and breast. A trio of small die chips below Liberty's left breast are indicative of the issue.
