1848<H10C> Medium Date MS60 ANACS. Medium date shifted right. "Valentine-9." This variety was the subject of two articles in the Gobrecht Journal, each later reprinted in Collective Volume Number Four of that publication. Although not recorded by Valentine (1931), Ahwash (1975), Breen (1988), or Blythe (1992), it was apparently first described by Will Neil in 1927, as either his N-2 or N-3 variety. John Zitz considered this variety in the March 1993 issue of the Gobrecht Journal with a reply by William Harmon in the July 1993 issue. Both articles illustrated this identical coin. This is apparently a very rare variety, and may qualify as fully R.7 in all grades. The date has the first two digits close to the rock below Liberty, but clearly not touching, while the final two digits lightly graze the base. The shield point is well left of the digit 1, while the pendant is over the diagonal of the digit 4, fully left of the upright of that digit. Extra points appear in the fields around stars 5, 6, 10, and 11. The reverse has a bisecting die crack through E of UNITED, H, M of DIME, and C of AMERICA. A second crack through the U of UNITED crosses the wreath to the D of DIME. William Harmon suggested in his article that this crack continued to join the first die crack above I of DIME, but close examination shows that the continuation is actually a die polishing line. This lovely example has reflective fields with bright silver luster and peripheral gold toning. The leaves at top of the wreath are weakly defined, although most other details are bold. This is a lovely example and provides the specialist with an extraordinary opportunity.
Ex: Bowers and Merena (4/1986), lot 2121.
From The William A.
