1848-D/D $5 AU58 PCGS. Winter 16-K. Die State II. Because the double punched mintmark is not nearly as pronounced on the 1848-D/D as it is on the 1846-D/D, it is not as well known or widely collected. On this Die State II piece, the first mintmark is faded but the top and bottom are still visible with magnification. Probably somewhere between 25 and 35 examples exist of this variety in all grades with most survivors topping out at the XF level. It is very rare in AU and above AU55 almost never encountered. None are presently known in Mint State, and in fact, only three other pieces have been certified in AU58. The fields are bright and semi-prooflike on each side with pronounced orange-gold coloration. Fully struck on the obverse, the reverse is well defined except on the eagle's neck, which is completely flat, almost looking like something clogged the die rather than traditional weakness of strike. Identifiable for pedigree purposes by a small planchet flake above star 5 next to the denticles, and a short mark just above the eagle's beak. From the Ashland City Collection.
