1848-D $5 MS62 NGC. Winter 15-J. Die State III. The 1848-D is a moderately available D-mint Half Eagle. However, in Uncirculated grades it is just as scarce as any other issues from this scarce Southern mint. Of the few pieces known in Uncirculated grades, this piece is listed on Winter's Condition Census as the second finest known. The coin has rich coppery-orange color with frosted mint luster intermixed with prooflikeness in the fields. This late die state shows heavy die clashing on the obverse and die cracks on the reverse in addition to die swelling on Liberty's neck (which resulted in several softly struck hair curls). Otherwise, sharply defined, except on the eagle's neck as always.Ex: Ed Milas Collection (Stack's, 5/95), lot 473, where it realized $17,600; Winthrop Carner; Numisma '95 (11/95), where it brought $12,650; Heritage Rare Coin Galleries. From the Ashland City Collection.
