<B>1848-D $5 AU55 NGC.</B></I> Variety 18-M. Die State III. On this variety, the second 8 in the date is about the same distance between the neck and the denticles, and the upright of the mintmark is over the left edge of the upright of the E in FIVE. The die state is affirmed by ill-defined stars 3 through 6, and a crack through the right side of the R in AMERICA, the two upper arrow points, to the wing. According to Winter's second edition of <I>Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint, 1838-1861 </B></I>(2003): "... Die State III coins are usually seen in low grades and they are extremely rare in AU55 or better." Traces of luster are visible in some of the recesses of this Choice AU example, and the design elements exhibit somewhat better definition that is typical for the issue. Semi-bright yellow-gold surfaces reveal a uniform distribution of minuscule marks.
