1848-D $5 AU53 PCGS. Variety 18-M. Die State III. According to Winter's second edition of Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint: 1838-1861 (2003), "The 1848-D is often regarded as one of the more common Dahlonega half eagles. This is most definitely not the case as it is actually quite scarce in any grade and very rare in high grades." Semiprooflike, khaki-gold surfaces are free of significant abrasions on this appealing piece. The late die state is characterized by pronounced weakness on stars 3-6, die clashing visible at Liberty's mouth and behind her throat, and a reverse die crack from the eagle's right (facing) wing down through the arrowheads and RI in AMERICA. Winter notes that coins in Die States II and III are usually found in low grades, and rare in AU55 or higher. An appealing example of this elusive issue, seldom seen with the present combination of high grade and advanced die state.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
