1848-D<$2 1/2> MS62 PCGS. Variety 10-M (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). The mintmark on this variety was punched in high, and touches the olive stem. The 1848-D is one of the more frequently encountered Dahlonega quarter eagles. Close to 200 pieces are believed known today with most examples concentrated in the XF and AU grade range. Around a dozen Uncirculated coins are known today and most of those are clustered in the MS60-61 range. This piece is tied with several others as second finest certified, an unknown number of which are doubtless resubmissions. This piece shows bright copper-gold coloration, and the striking details are strongly defined, as usual. A number of small abrasions are scattered over each side, the only one of singular mention being a shallow scrape above Liberty's head.
