<B>1848 Cass And Butler Lithograph By Nathaniel Currier.</B></I> This Grand National Banner for the Democratic Party carries portraits of candidates Lewis Cass and William O. Butler. Their Whig opponents were promoting Mexican War hero General Zachary Taylor and generally depicted him in full military regalia. Is it possible that the Democrats, not wanting to be too terribly upstaged in the heroism department, played up Butler's service by showing him here in uniform as well? Ironically, Butler was directly under Taylor some two years earlier during the Battle of Monterrey. 12.5" x 16" overall in somewhat later pine frame.
