1848-C $2 1/2 MS61 PCGS. Variety 9-F. While a fairly common coin in lower grades, the '48-C is difficult to locate above the XF level. Even if one were to encounter a Mint State representative, the eye appeal would most likely be limited due to typical poor striking characteristics. In stark contrast, this is an appealing coin despite the assigned MS61 grade. The strike is even and average for the issue. The number of abrasions are typical for the grade, but the green-gold surfaces are exceptionally bright, lustrous, and confirm this coin's originality. A noticeable indention can be seen on Liberty's eye running laterally to her nose, and can confirm the identity of this coin for future collectors. To date (2/05), NGC and PCGS combined report 7 coins in MS61, with 6 pieces finer. Several of these coins may represent resubmissions.
