1848-C<$2 1/2> MS61 NGC. Variety 10-F. A late, and rare state of this interesting die variety. In his reference Gold Coins of the Charlotte Mint, Douglas Winter mentions that 10-F obverse die is heavily buckled, or sunken, which creates a wavy appearance on the obverse field and the bust truncation. Since metal flows to the sunken obverse die, the strike is soft on the eagle's head and neck. Nonetheless, the eagle's wings, Liberty's hair above the ear, and the stars are relatively sharp for a C-mint issue. The bright yellow-gold surfaces display much luster and are only moderately abraded, particularly on Liberty's cheek. Just 16,788 pieces were struck. Census: 7 in 61, 5 finer (11/05).
