1848-C<$2 1/2> MS60 NGC. Variety 9-F. While no Charlotte Mint quarter eagle can be called common, the 1848-C is one of the more frequently encountered C-mint issues, with a respectable mintage of 16,788 pieces. Nonetheless, it is a condition rarity of the first order, being scarce in XF or higher condition and nearly unobtainable in Uncirculated grade. Collecting of coins with mintmarks was a virtually unknown practice when this coin was minted. Contemporary numismatists collected one example from each year, without regard for the issuing mint. Augustus Heaton's 1893 A Treatise on Mint Marks helped the cause, but the practice became common only in the 1930s. By that time, most Charlotte and Dahlonega coins were well worn, with the average grade being VF. This is a bright example with a slight accent of reddish patina present. The striking details are above average for a C-mint, and the most obvious pedigree identifiers are a pair of field marks on the obverse, one is located between stars 4 and 5, the other above the head of Liberty.
