ANCIENT

SEA-MARGINS

AS MEMORIALS OF CHANGES

IN THE RELATIVE LEVELS OF SEA AND LAND

ROBERT CHAMBERS

EDINBURGH
1848

BOOK DESCRIPTION:1st Edition, 8vo (23cm), vi, 336pp, large folding map of Lochaber, frontispiece view from “St Andrews Links”. Recent quarter morocco, with marbled boards. Fresh plain endpapers.

CONDITION: GOOD. Recent binding is fine with no wear. Fresh dark green endpapers. Some foxing, but paper generally clean, throughout. Map is complete, but has some creasing. This is a detailed examination of the evidence of changes in sea-levels primarily in Scotland but also in England and abroad. Chambers' main aim is to prove that Great Britain was once far more deeply submerged than it is now. While not as controversial as his Vestiges, this is the work that established Chambers as an important geologist as well as a general writer and publisher.

******************

Robert Chambers FRSE FGS (1802 –1871) was a Scottish publisher, geologist, evolutionary thinker, author and journal editor who, like his elder brother and business partner William Chambers, was highly influential in mid-19th century scientific and political circles.
