1848 (8 and 24 March) Famine Period letters from a Dublin merchant arranging for imports of "Indian corn" (maize) - known as "Peel's Brimstone" to feed the starving
manuscript, pp2 and pp1
25 by 20cm., 10 by 8in.

From James Pim & Co.., 11 Burgh Quay, Dublin, to Abraham Bell and Isaac Harvey in New York arranging for imports of "Indian Corn" (maize), at first unpopular in Ireland and known there as "Peel's Brimstone". The failure of the Irish potato harvests of 1845 and 1846 resulted in widespread famine. Peel, the Prime Minister, refused to ban Irish corn exports which continued, often under armed guard, and instead provided for large scale imports of American maize which was retailed at a penny a pound as part of an extensive food and relief works programme.
