1848 $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. Struck at the beginning of the C
1848 $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. Struck at the beginning of the California Gold Rush era, this date is overshadowed by the famous 1848 CAL quarter eagles, although the non-CAL examples are actually rarer in Mint State grades. The mintage of this Philadelphia Mint quarter eagle was less than half the mintage of similarly dated Charlotte or Dahlonega coins. Just 6,500 pieces were struck, and most of the survivors from the mintage are circulated with XF the usually seen grade, when this date is seen at all. This example has sharp design details on both sides, except for the eagle's right leg (viewer's left) that exhibits the usual weakness. Although light abrasions are reflected in the moderately prooflike fields on both sides, the surfaces are attractive with light yellow luster. Only one example has ever received a finer grade from either of the two major grading services. Census: 2 in 63, 1 finer (10/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
