<B>1848 $2 1/2 MS61 NGC.</B></I> This is a popular date due to the existence of the 1848 CAL quarter eagles. However, it is the normal 1848 variety that is actually rarer in Mint State grades. Just 6,500 of these were struck, and nearly all survivors show evidence of circulation. Although the left facing leg is a trifle weak, all other details on both sides are nicely defined. The surfaces are brilliant and frosty with pleasing orange-gold luster.
