1848 $2 1/2 MS61 NGC.<p>While the 1848 CAL is perhaps the most famous Quarter Eagle from this year, its "regular" counterpart is also a significant rarity that is worthy of careful consideration by 19th century gold specialists. Like the 1847, the 1848 is known for incompleteness of strike on the eagle's left (facing) leg. That said, we note that the present example is more sharply impressed than the 1847 that we are also offering in this sale. The surfaces are bathed in rich reddish-gold color with softly frosted luster that yields to modest brightness in the fields. Moderately abraded, yet virtually free of singularly distracting blemishes. Population: 4 in 61, 6 finer (4/02).Ex: Charles Kramer Collection (Superior, 12/88), lot 133. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
