1848<$2 1/2> MS61 NGC. This is an extremely popular date for it is the year of the famous CAL quarter eagle, although this is one of the 7,497 examples coined without the countermark. Presumably, this was struck in gold from other sources. Walter Breen noted that Jacob Shapiro, aka J.F. Bell, circulated want lists for this issue in the late 1950s, notifying dealers of the actual rarity of the issue. As a result, some consider this date to be overrated; however, we believe that is not the case. Few Mint State examples are known, as reflected by the population data. It is fascinating to consider the total population of both grading services, for this and the 1848 CAL variety. In MS60 or finer grades, PCGS and NGC have combined to certify just 20 examples of this issue, compared to 47 examples of the 1848 CAL variety! Sharply struck with lovely honey-gold color and reflective fields. Only the eagle's right leg is lacking definition. Population: 5 in 61, 7 finer (5/05).
