VF35 PCGS.</B></I> Struck from native ore brought directly from the California gold fields shortly after the discovery of the precious metal by James W. Marshall at Sutter's Mill on the American River, the 1848 CAL. quarter eagle is one of the most famous and popular of all U.S. coins. It is considered by many to be this nation's first commemorative coin, and given the intent and the counterstamp it is surprising that more were not saved at the time of issue. Only 1,389 pieces were originally marked with the "CAL." counterstamp after the shipment of California gold was sent to Philadelphia by the Secretary of War W.L. Marcy, and analysis of past auction records and other data indicates that few than 200, and perhaps as few as 150, pieces have survived in all grades. Very rare in AU and especially so in Mint State, this issue is more common in VF and XF grades, a range in which the present coin comfortably fits.<BR>This example is the definition of premium quality for the grade, with moderate wear present throughout but with a remarkable lack of abrasions or other unsightly defects on either side. The fields must have been originally highly prooflike at the time of issue, as much luster remains in the protected areas even after 25 points of wear. The reddish-gold coloration testifies to the coins originality. A popular coin in a highly collectible grade, a combination that is a likely recipe for spirited bidding before the hammer falls. </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed>No Prior Data Recorded </TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium.
